A new generation of botulinum toxin has officially launched in New Zealand, with Auckland’s Clinic42 leading the way as one of the first clinics in the country to treat patients with the innovative formulation.

Now approved by Medsafe, Relfydess is a purified botulinum toxin with a unique strain, unlike any currently available on the market.

With no human or animal excipients and no protein, it represents a significant advance in formulation. Clinical trials show faster onset, with results typically visible within one to three days, and longevity of up to six months for frown and smile lines.

Dr Ellen Selkon, Director at Clinic42 and part of the current Galderma trial, has already treated patients with the formulation.

“Relfydess has already been used safely and loved in Australia, USA and parts of Europe for over a year, giving us strong evidence around its safety and efficacy in real world settings,” she says.

Relfydess has been shown to work faster and last longer than other botulinum toxins. Patients typically notice results within one to three days, compared to the longer onset times of existing options.

Clinical trials also show average results lasting up to six months for frown and smile lines — twice as long as many current treatments. Due to its extended duration, correct placement is critical.

“Because of its longer-lasting effects, Relfydess needs to be injected by highly experienced clinicians,” explains Dr Selkon. “If a toxin is placed in the wrong muscle, complications can occur, and with this formulation, they may last longer.”

RELFYDESS MAY BE ESPECIALLY BENEFICIAL FOR:

  • Patients whose results with existing toxins fade quickly
  • Sportspeople or those with high metabolisms who metabolise toxin faster
  • Low-dose areas such as lip flips, where traditional treatments wear off quickly

“From what I’ve seen so far, this is a fantastic option for patients who want more durable results, especially those with active lifestyles or faster metabolisms,” adds Dr Selkon.
