Guidance for patients on Weight Management medication
- If you are experiencing any side effects that you are unable to control, please call our nurses to discuss as we may be able to prescribe medication to help you initially. You don’t have to battle on your own.
- Injectable weight loss medication may cause rapid weight loss. This can in certain circumstances lead to loss of lean muscle The need to pre-empt the muscle loss is vital. We recommend the following:
- Strength training with weights at least 3x per week – start with low weights and build up weekly. Buy some dumb bells and keep them at home if you are struggling for time to go to the gym. If you have an injury Emsculpt may be an option to strengthen muscle in preparation to exercise.
- Increase your protein intake to a minimum of 60g daily. Add in protein shakes. This will also help keep you full longer. Start the day with some eggs instead of cereal. Have high protein snacks available during the day.
- Nutrient rich diet focus on a balanced diet with adequate carbohydrates, fats, and fibre to support overall health and muscle function
- Facial Fat Loss can occur when you lose weight rapidly. This can unfortunately in some cases lead to a sunken in look especially in the cheek area and the temples. If this is a concern, we can help you with this by using our expertise in Cosmetic Medicine.
- Skin changes occur with GLP1 injectable products as they can have an effect on the production of collagen and elastin. We recommend medical grade skincare as well as non-invasive procedures to help maintain healthy radiant looking skin.
Non-invasive procedures may include Dermapen, IPL, Nano fractionated laser and Tribella and injectable procedures such as botulinum toxin, dermal fillers, Profhilo, Profhilo Structura and Sculptra
If you have any concerns, please contact us to discuss this further.
If you think you have an emergency with acute abdominal pain that may be pancreatitis, please call our after-hours number on the phone or go to your local hospital or after-hours clinic informing them of the name of the medication you are taking and stop the medication immediately until further medical advice.
