Some frequently asked questions about Botox

WHAT IS BOTULINUM TOXIN TREATMENT (Botox)?

Botulinum Toxin therapy is available and registered in New Zealand in two forms Botox and Dysport®. Your Cosmetic Medicine Practitioner will determine which product is best for you. This product is a natural, highly purified protein that is extracted from the bacteria, Clostridium Botulinum, in a similar way that penicillin is from mould. The product is produced under strictly regulated conditions and although it contains a minute amount of human blood protein, modern screening procedures eliminate the risk of blood borne disease.

HOW DOES BOTOX WORK?

Botox® treatment works by relaxing wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoothed, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. Once the muscles are relaxed, one cannot contract them and continue to make the undesirable facial expressions. Thus the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming.

Botox®  a simple 10-minute procedure performed by one of our experienced doctors. The most common areas we treat are the frown lines, lines on the forehead, and the ‘Crows Feet’ around the eyes. However it is also successfully used for lines around the mouth, shaping your jaw muscles, lifting your brow, hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating) and for tension-migraine headaches. Botox treatments are also used to treat medical conditions such as Bell’s palsy and Facial spasms.

Please note: Botox is a registered trademark of Allergan.

WHAT IS DYSPORT® TREATMENT?

Dysport® is the European brand of Botulinum Toxin Type A. (Botox® is the American brand for the equivalent product.)  Dysport® is a simple, effective, non-surgical treatment that works by relaxing facial muscles on the forehead, thereby reducing and smoothing away frown-lines and wrinkles.

Dysport® has been globally approved for over 20 years. In fact, Dysport® has been available in New Zealand for over 12 years for treating neuro-muscular conditions and was the first botulinum toxin Type A to be approved in New Zealand for medical use.

HOW DOES DYSPORT WORK?

A very small dose of Dysport® is injected in the specific frown muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. Once the muscles are relaxed, one cannot contract them and continue to make the undesirable facial expressions. Thus, the lines gradually smooth and new lines are prevented from forming. The treatment takes around 10-15mins and is minimally invasive and relatively pain free.

HOW QUICKLY WILL I SEE RESULTS FROM DYSPORT?

You may notice the results of Dysport® in just 2-3 days. The peak effect is between 10-21 days after treatment.

HOW LONG DOES A DYSPORT TREATMENT RESULT LAST?

The effects from Dysport® typically last 3 to 6 months. Subsequent treatments may prove to have more lasting results, up to one year in duration. Treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) may last up to one year (average 6 months).

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE TREATMENT?

A full medical history will be taken prior to your treatment and you will have an opportunity to discuss any aspects with your Cosmetic Physician. You will need to complete a consent form before treatment.

Your doctor will determine exactly where to use the product to achieve the best results for you. No local anaesthetic is required, although your doctor may use ice or apply a topical anaesthetic cream if required.   Tiny amounts are injected into selected facial muscles using a very fine needle.   Discomfort is minimal and brief described as an ant bite sting, which lasts for a few seconds.

WILL I LOOK FROZEN OR PLASTIC?

If your Dysport® treatment is administered properly by a highly-trained clinician, you will still be able to show expression. Depending on the area treated, it may be appropriate to only weaken the muscle movement. You can discuss this with your clinician prior to treatment.

The vast majority of clients are extremely happy with the results of a Dysport® treatment. The most common comment made by friends and family of clients after receiving Dysport® is that they appear to be more “rested.”

DOES THIS TREATMENT CAUSE MORE WRINKLES TO FORM?

The treatment relaxes facial muscles that cause expression lines, it does not cause more wrinkles to form.

WHAT SIDE EFFECTS COULD OCCUR?

Occasional tenderness and mild bruising at the injection site, mild headache in the first week after treatment, drooping of an eyelid or eyebrow which is uncommon and temporary lasting 1-4 weeks, asymmetrical effect which is correctable with a free top-up 14 days after treatment. There have been no permanent side effects reported.

WHERE CAN IT BE USED?

In New Zealand it is registered for use in frown lines between your eyebrows and on your forehead. However it is also successfully used in the “crow’s feet”, smokers lines around the mouth and treating Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) for tension- migraine headaches, and many other facial and neck areas.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The price is dependent on the amount of product used which varies with different areas, the average being $410 for frown lines between your eyes.

WHAT AFTERCARE DO I NEED?

Don’t rub the treated area, don’t lie down for 3 hours after the treatment, don’t have a facial within a week of treatment.

WHO SHOULD NOT BE TREATED?

Dysport® has not been studied in pregnancy, and it is therefore unknown if fetal harm will result if a pregnant woman is treated with Dysport®. Therefore, the use of Dysport® is not recommended during pregnancy. Additionally, it is unknown if Dysport® (botulinum A exotoxin) is excreted in breast milk, where it could affect a nursing infant. Therefore, Dysport® treatment is not recommended for use in lactating women. Additionally, patients with neuromuscular disease, such as myasthenia gravis and Eaton-Lambert syndrome, should not be treated with Dysport® as it may worsen these conditions. Of course, anyone who has had an allergic reaction to Dysport® should not be treated.
